What is Access to Work?

Access to Work is a publicly funded employment support programme run by the Department of Work & Pensions that supports people with a health condition or *disability such as ADHD, Autism, Mental Health as well as physical disabilities.

*disability has the same meaning as in the Equality Act 2010 this defines disability as a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on your ability to carry out normal day to day activities

 As part of Access to Work, you may be eligible for:

  • Advice and support about managing your mental health at work and to overcome work-related obstacles.
  • ADHD Coaching.  (Typically refunds you for 6 months of ADHD Coaching)
  • A grant to help pay for practical support with your work.
    Practical aids such as noise cancelling headphones and standing desks.
    Travel to work costs if you cannot use public transport.
    Virtual Assistants.

 To be eligible you must:

  • Have a physical or mental health condition or disability that means you need support to do your job or get to and from work.
  • Be 16 or over.
  • Be in paid work (or be about to start or return to paid work in the next 12 weeks).
  • Live and work (or be about to start or return to work) in England, Scotland or Wales.

A paid job can be full or part-time and can include:

  • Employment
  • Self-employment
  • An apprenticeship
  • A work trial or work experience
  • An internship
  • A work placement

 Notes

  • How much you get depends on your circumstances.
  • There is no restriction on however much you earn or have in savings.
  • It doesn’t matter what your occupation is.
  • The money does not have to be paid back and will not affect your other benefits.
  • If you are self-employed, a sole trader, or your employer has under 50 staff, A2W refunds 100%, over 50 staff A2W refunds 80%.
